At Shockley, Noyce worked on the development of the transistor. In 1957 he and seven other scientists known as the traitorous eight left Shockley to form Fairchild Semiconductor. At Fairchild, Noyce continued to work on the transistor and the integrated circuit.

In 1968, Noyce co founded Intel Corporation with Gordon Moore and Andrew Grove. Intel would go on to become one of the leading manufacturers of microchips in the world.

Noyce served as Intel's CEO from 1968 until 1975 when he resigned to pursue other interests. He remained active in philanthropy and served on a number of boards and committees until his untimely death from a heart attack in 1990.
